Domain Names
A domain name is your own address on the Internet! Your own domain
name can be a powerful tool and it costs very little to register
your own choice of name.
A domain name means that a site can be addressed with your company
name, or a name associated with your company, e.g. www.yourcompany.co.nz.
You can choose your own domain name however it must be unique on
the Internet.
Benefits of having your own Domain Name
- Having a domain name makes it easier for people to find your business
on the Internet and gives you a more professional image.
- You can have personalised email
e.g. yourname@yourcompany.co.nz rather than yourcompany@xtra.co.nz
etc, which customers will find
easier to remember.
- You can have several different
email addresses; e.g. myname@yourcompany.co.nz can also receive
emails for info@yourcompany.co.nz or sales@yourcompany.co.nz.
You can also accept other addresses and redirect them elsewhere.
e.g. support@yourcompany.co.nz may be redirected to a support
contractor.
- When you register a domain name it belongs exclusively to you,
and prevents other companies from using it (assuming you have the
right to the name)
- You can also have a catch-all
address, which enables misspelled addresses to still be delivered
to your
mailbox,
e.g. myname@yourcompany.co.nz
will still be received instead of getting lost or bounced.
- Your Internet address remains the same,
regardless of your physical location. Without your own domain
name, each time you change service
provider (ISP) your domain name must change! This can be costly
and most of the marketing and branding of your “old” address
is lost.
Your choice however should be memorable and reflect your business.
You must also be careful not to use a name that is used by another
company as a business or brand name or who could face legal issues.
You should aim to use a domain name similar to your business
name so it is easy for your customers to remember and leverages
off
your existing branding investment.
If you want to use your domain name with your web site, e.g. www.yourcompany.co.nz
you will require virtual hosting. We can set all this up and configure
it for you.
There are two types of domain name in use on the Internet. Both
can be access form any computer online, anywhere in the world.
If a domain ends in three letters (such as .com, .edu., .org),
it does not have a geographic branding and is known as an international
domain. A lot of US sites use this type of domain. Domains ending
in two letters are known as country domains and brand your address
to a particular country (business.co.nz, business.com.au, business.com.sa).
